There are two aspects about my work: the first is the adaptation and orchestration of Astor Piazzolla´s music, the second is the interpretation of it as a conductor.
I have my own ensemble consisting of Argentinean musicians and I conduct my own adaptations for Chamber- or Symphony Orchestras that may be interested in performing those adaptations.
Nowadays, the music of Astor Piazzolla is played by musicians all over the world, but they only approach a very small part of his work. This is due to the fact that the majority of the scores of the original Piazzolla´s arrangements of have not been published.
Fortunately, Piazzolla recorded almost his entire work and that is why, a few years ago, I decided to rewrite the original recordings (the non-edited arrangements written for tango quintets: bandoneón, violin, electric guitar, piano and bass) and orchestrate them for ensembles of strings, woodwinds, piano and percussion (without bandoneón).
Of course the classical works of the master are also represented in my repertoire.
Astor Piazzolla was an exceptional composer and instrumentist but if one starts to manipulate his music, it is very difficult to distinguish the role of composer and the role of interpreter. Working without the bandoneón is perhaps a disadvantage, as the music was originally written with the idea of putting the bandoneón central in the arrangements. However, in my opinion this is only one side of the story, because the music was also composed to be performed by Piazzolla himself. Playing his music without bandoneón allows me to approach his aspects as a composer without the risk of people comparing my adaptations and interpretations with the original versions. Moreover, adding instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and percussion gives a new and colourful sound to the works.
I have written these adaptations for:
• 2 violins (one soloist)
• 2 violas
• 2 cellos (one soloist)
• Double bass
• Flute
• Oboe (& English horn)
• 2 clarinets (one soloist)
• 2 horns (one soloist)
• Bassoon
• Piano
• Percussion
The fact that I have written and conducted in many occasions for non-Argentinean musicians, has lead me to reflect on the role of tango performance in general and the music of Piazzolla in particular. It has also lead me to become extremely meticulous in writing the scores. Accents, articulations and the precise rhythm of the phrase are listed in detail, together with everything else which makes up Piazzolla´s music but usually does not appear written.
I would like to clarify that my transcriptions can be adapted both for Chamber and for Symphony orchestra. I have a wide number of arrangements at my disposal, but the fact that the transcriptions have been written by myself shows that a significant number of them are rarely interpreted.
My aim is to recover the beautiful and unknown repertoire of “maestro” Astor Piazzolla and to do something different with his music. But perhaps what is more important, is that somehow I want to compensate for the gratitude which I have felt towards him since I was a teenager. |
